Ron's story

28 years in leather.
Then a hot dog cart.

Ron Demers spent 28 years selling leather out of his father's business in Lewiston, hauling it to shoe makers, upholstery shops and rodeo cowboys all over the country. His mother and his grandmother taught him to cook. Everywhere he traveled, he ate something good and came home and tried to make it again.

Texas and Wyoming are where he picked up brisket and pulled pork, sitting out back of little barbecue towns watching men tend smokers all day. He started here with a small hot dog cart. Then a customer offered him her old camper for $500. He bought it, put $7,000 of stainless steel into it, and has been cooking out of it ever since. He has been on Route 26 long enough that the summer people come looking for a red hot dog and a Moxie the week he opens back up.

The rig

The yellow 1973 camper

Yellow with a red stripe down the side. Bought for $500 from a customer, rebuilt in stainless, and still only about 68,000 miles on it.

The smoker truck

A rusted-out flatbed with a barrel smoker, a rocket fin and two skeletons along for the ride. A brisket takes twelve hours or more. Ron does not rush it.

Where to slow down

Route 26 in Oxford, just down the road from Maine-ly Action Sports. Picnic tables out front. Pull in and order at the window.

If the truck is there, Ron is cooking.
